Чуфут-Кале - наиболее сохранившийся и посещаемый из "пещерных городов". Экскурсия сюда - это путешествие в средневековый Юго-Западный Крым. Время возникновения города не установлено: одни исследователи считают VI в., другие X-XII вв. Крепость была хорошо укреплена. Однако в 1299 г. войска Ногая захватили город, он стал татарской крепостью. Восточнее крепостной стены татары поселили караимов. После ухода татар в Бахчисарай, караимы остались в "пещерном городе". Город получил название Чуфут-Кале (Иудейская крепость). В конце XIX в. караимы покинули Чуфут-Кале, город обезлюдел. До наших дней сохранились оборонительные стены и пещеры, мавзолей Джаныке-Ханум, крепостной ров, вырубленный в скале, участки древних улиц, молитвенные дома караимов - кенасы.
